Our Mom passed away recently and while she was not a hoarder, she
accumulated a lot of belongings that she never used, many not even once as evidenced by the tags still on them. She loved to shop, particularly for jewelry, be it at a flea market or a high end jeweler, and as you might expect, she left behind
a lot
of jewelry, some fancy and some not.
Some ascribe this behavior of buying something then never using it to the
specialness spiral. The gist being
once you decide to not use an item, it starts feeling
special and because it is now
special, you need to protect it and
are now less likely to use it in the future.
Given the size of her collection, we decided to start wearing one piece
each day as a remembrance. While all her jewelry has incalculable value to
us, some pieces seem to be costume and others look to be of a fine quality,
but we don't really know.
We started this project to share Mom's eclectic collection of jewelry and to end the specialness spiral surrounding these items. We also thought it would be a good way to see if others could help shed some light on the origins of each piece. We would love to learn more about each piece, when it may have been made, where it was likely made and what it looks to be made of. Each day we will post a photo of the piece we are wearing alongside what we know about it, with the hope someone out there can fill in the blanks.
